Meet the Maker // Poppy & Pom

We kick off our Meet the Maker series for our May market with the mum and daughter team behind gorgeous kid’s clothing label, Poppy & Pom.

Tell us about your brand?

We are an Australian made and designed children’s clothing label established in 2016 by mother/daughter duo Rachel and Heather. Our design philosophy is to create something unique for those we care about most; our children. With this in mind we choose quality fabrics, so you can be proud to pass them onto family or friends as your children grow.

Describe an average day at Poppy and Pom?

For me (Rachel) no two days are the same! I manage the business so there is a lot of admin and time on socials that most people don’t see. I could be posting on Instagram one minute and working out our cashflow or monthly stocktake the next. I also spend a few days a week sewing at mum’s and helping to make everything we design. For mum (Heather) there is more of a routine and luckily she loves what she does as she does a lot of it! Most days for her are spent at the sewing machine making everything and evenings are spent cutting out new stock or sitting on the lounge sewing on hundreds of buttons! And then on the weekends one or both of us are off selling at a design market.

Yours is a relatively new business. Can you give us a potted history of your career to date?

We started Poppy & Pom in 2016. Mum was after a change in her career and as many of my friends had started having children it seemed only natural to start a new children’s clothing label. Mum had her own clothing business when I was young and has always loved fashion and design. To begin with mum sewed and sold at markets full time and I managed the business side of things whilst still working full time in marketing for a large property developer. Late last year the business was growing quite rapidly so I took the leap of faith that we could grow the business further and resigned from my corporate job to be able to do what I really loved and work on Poppy & Pom full time. We are continuing to grow and I hope that 2019 is going to be a great year for us!

This is your first time at Bowerbird. What are you most looking forward to?

Yes, it is! I’ve known about it for a while but as we are from Sydney applying to attend a market in other state is a pretty big deal. It wasn’t until this year, now we have both mum and I working full time, that we felt we had the chance to apply. We are super excited to have been accepted and I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone in Adelaide thinks of us (we hope they love it!), as well as the chance to meet all the other stallholders and experience the vibe at Bowerbird as I’ve heard how great an event it is!

That’s lovely! If you could share one piece of advice for aspiring designers and makers, what would it be?

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Mum is much better at this than me. She will decide on something and just go for it whereas I’m a little more risk adverse. But in the end what have you got to lose? If you love what you do just believe in yourself and go for it!

Check out Poppy & Pom’s Autumn/Winter 2019 collection here and come and see them at Bowerbird, 3-5 May 2019.
