Meet the Maker // Bahru Leather

Fliss Brophy is one of 16 Emerging Designers at our upcoming May market. She shares the story behind her brand Bahru Leather

Tell us about Bahru Leather?

Bahru started in 2008 when I was living in Singapore. I was looking for a baby bag made from beautiful leather without a label splashed on it. I couldn’t find one so I had one made, along with some other smaller pieces which I showed to some friends and it grew slowly from there. All the pieces are designed to be “beautifully practical” – with leather that looks and feels beautiful whilst also being highly functional for the person using it.

Describe a day in the life of Fliss Brophy…

I’m up early to make the school lunches and get our three kids ready for the bus for school (there is usually at least one pair of shoes missing!). We live on a farm in WA so there are always jobs to do. This time of the year the calves are being born so it’s always exciting to see the new additions. I like to get in the garden when I can and at the moment our figs are popping so they always make a good snack whilst watering and weeding.

What artist/album is currently on high rotation as you work?

I’m right into podcasts at the moment. Favourites include Chat 10 Looks 3 and Dispatch to A Friend.

Do you have a favourite piece from your latest collection?

I love the new French Navy colour across the range and the Paris in Caramel is my favourite style and the leather is smooth and gets better and better the more you wear it.

This is your first time at Bowerbird. Which other stallholders are you looking forward to seeing?

Oh so many!! Emma Kate Co. for stationery, Crayon Chick for beautiful baskets, Read and Bell for clothing and Lisa Peri for ceramics. I’m also very happy that Turner + Turner will be there – they make the most beautiful things and they also live very close to me!

Bowerbird is celebrating 10 years in the making. What were you doing 10 years ago and what are your plans for the next decade?

Ten years ago I was pregnant with our middle child and living in Singapore and getting very busy with Bahru. For the next 10 years I’d like Bahru to continue to create beautifully practical leather bags that people love to wear.

Meet Fliss and see the full Bahru Leather range at Bowerbird Design Market, 3-5 May 2019.
